History and Mission of
FloridaOne DMAT
FloridaOne DMAT was established in the late 80’s and has been progressively improving our level of preparedness with commitment to excellence and efficiency and assuring we meet our mission as stated below:
- Provides medical response to supplement health and environmental health services at the site of the disaster; and to assist at a medical facility were needed.
- Patient evacuation to designated locations throughout the US for casualties that cannot be cared for locally; and,
- Hospitalization in a national network of hospitals that have agreed to accept patients in the event of a major disaster.
- Provide education and technical assistance on many disaster related subjects, such as Hospital DeCon, HECS and expert knowledge and research.
FloridaOne DMAT was one of the first 15 teams formed nationally; there are now over 100 teams nationwide. We are a Level One team in Region IV. We have deployed to such events as Hurricane Andrew in Miami, Hurricane Marilyn in the US Virgin Islands, the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Olympics in Salt Lake City, Florida Wildfires in 1998, Ground Zero at the World Trade Center, 2004 Hurricanes of Florida and most recently Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma.
